Chapter One

The door to Harlan's workshop opened with the reluctant groan of wood swollen by decades of sea air, and Emery stepped into a room where the entire world had been pinned to the walls. Ink-drawn coastlines curled like sleeping animals beneath the amber light of oil lamps, and the smell of vellum and walnut-gall ink settled over everything like a second atmosphere. At the far table, half-buried under a drift of compass roses and unfinished archipelagos, the old cartographer did not look up — he simply said, "You're late," as though lateness were a fixed coordinate on one of his maps.

Emery set down the leather case she'd carried from the harbor and let her eyes adjust to the workshop's permanent dusk. Every surface held some fragment of geography: tracing paper ghosts of rivers she couldn't name, copper plates etched with mountain ranges that looked more like the spines of sleeping dragons. A half-finished chart of the Northern Passage was stretched across a light table, its contour lines so delicate they seemed to breathe.

"I brought the measurements from the harbor survey," she said, but Harlan was already reaching for the case, his hands moving with the particular certainty of someone who had spent fifty years translating the curvature of the earth onto flat paper.
